Quite the ladies’ man, this Mike Smith… put him in the saddle of a filly or mare in a big-money horse race and it is instant mutual love.
Friday at Santa Anita, in a $2-million Ladies’ Classic Breeders’ Cup race that was expected to be the best and most closely contested of all the 15 races in this two-day, $25.5-million thoroughbred extravaganza, Smith guided his current girlfriend, Royal Delta, to a convincing length-and-a-half victory.
Mike captured the fifteenth victory in November (tying the record), only the second time Mike Smith had gotten on Drosselmeyer. He booted him down the endless home stretch at Churchill Downs to win the Breeders’ Cup Classic, passing former girlfriend Chantal Sutherland, who had looked like a winner aboard Game On Dude. Trevor Denman’s classic call: “Mike Smith, like a ghost, from the outside, dressed in all white …“
That was his record-tying 15th Breeders’ Cup win, and Smith says it’s special for more than just the number.
“Both Jerry [Bailey] and I have all 15 wins in original Breeders’ Cup races,” he says, “not in any of those add-on races they did to make it a two-day event.”
Mike Smith will attempt to capture the treasured 16th victory this weekend…
